Elena Grigoryevna was born on November 7, 1958 in the city of Przhevalsk of the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic. She majored in physics (with concentration in chemical physics) and graduated from Novosibirsk State University with honors in 1981. Her entire professional life has been tightly connected to the institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS): in 1981–1985, E.G. Bagryanskaya was a PhD student at Novosibirsk State University. Later, she worked as a junior researcher (1985–1990), researcher (1990–1993), and senior researcher at the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion, SB RAS. In 1993–2012, Elena Grigoryevna was the head of a group, and later, the head of a laboratory at the International Tomography Center, SB RAS. In 1985, she defended her candidate dissertation and, in 1998, the doctoral dissertation titled "Development and Application of Novel Spin Polarization Methods to Study Photochemical Radical Reactions." E.G. Bagryanskaya became a professor in 2002. In 2012–2015, Elena Grigoryevna was appointed an acting director of the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry, SB RAS. In 2015, she was elected a director of the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry, SB RAS, and her appointment was approved by the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations. E.G. Bagryanskaya has been heading the Laboratory of Physical Methods since 2012. Since 2016, she has been the head of the Laboratory of Magnetic Radiospectroscopy and the Department of Physical Organic Chemistry at the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry, SB RAS.
Her major areas of interest are as follows: development of novel highly sensitive time-resolved magnetic resonance methods for detecting short-lived radicals and their application in studying the mechanisms of radical reactions; electron-nuclear spin polarization and electron relaxation in very low-intensity magnetic fields; nitroxyl-controlled radical polymerization; investigation and application of functional properties of spin probes and spin labels based on nitroxyl and trityl radicals and their supramolecular complexes; the use of magnetic resonance methods to study the structure and functions of biopolymers and novel magnetic materials.
E.G. Bagryanskaya is an Editorial Board member of the Applied Magnetic Resonance journal, a member of the committee of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance (ISMAR), the vice president of the International EPR Society (IES), the president of the Asia-Pacific EPR Society (APES), the president of the Russian EPR Society, an expert of the Russian Science Foundation and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and a professor of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Elena Grigoryevna was working as a professor at the University of Oxford, Tohoku University (Japan), the University of Provence Aix-Marseille I, the University of Zurich, and the University of North Carolina.
E.G. Bagryanskaya was an academic supervisor of 14 PhD students who have defended their candidate dissertations and more than 20 graduate theses. She was a dissertation advisor for one doctoral candidate. Elena Grigoryevna is a member of the Academic Board and the Dissertation Council for Doctoral Theses at the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry, SB RAS. E.G. Bagryanskaya has delivered over 200 oral, invited, and plenary lectures at international conferences. She has been an organizer of several international conferences.
Elena Grigoryevna has been awarded the Presidential Grant for Young Doctors of Sciences (1996–1998) and has won an award for young doctoral researchers from the Foundation for the Promotion of Science in 2001–2002. E.G. Bagryanskaya has been a supervisor for a number of grant projects received from the Russian Science Foundation, Russian Foundation of Basic Research, Federal Special-Purpose Programs, CRDF, INTAS, etc. She has been awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Novosibirsk region. Elena Grigoryevna is a member of the Academic Board at the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry, SB RAS and a member of the Dissertation Council D 003.049.01 at the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry. Over the past decade, she has been a member of Dissertation Councils at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, SB RAS, and at the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion, SB RAS.
