Expert meeting on Best Available Techniques and Best Environmental Practices under the Stockholm Convention

The expert meeting on Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Best Environmental Practices (BEP) under the Stockholm Convention was held from 6 to 8 November 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The event was held in combined format, the  part  of  participants attended the meeting an online. The meeting summed up the results of the work of the Regional Centers in the period from November 2022 to October 2023. Head of the Stockholm Convention Regional Center Elena Bagryanskaya and Deputy head  of the Stockholm Convention Regional Center  Dmitriy  Polovyanenko took part in Expert meeting from Russia.

Several topics were discussed during the meeting:

- Discussion the intersessional processes in accordance with the workplan for review and update of the guidelines and guidance on BAT and BEP agreed to at the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (decision SC-11/5 and document UNEP/POPS/COP.11/8, annex II);

- Agreement on further steps for finalizing the guidelines/guidance to be submitted to the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties;

- Updates on ongoing work under the Stockholm Convention:

    Role of regional centres on elimination of PCB

    Role of regional centres in data collection under GMP/EE

    Role of regional centres on DDT phasing out and alternatives to DDT;

- Update on the implementation of projects under the SGP on plastic waste;

- Cooperation with the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the newly adopted Global Framework for Chemicals.

 

Head of the Stockholm Convention Regional Center in Russia Elena Bagryanskaya presented a detailed report about the results of the work of the Regional Center for the year.
