URSOLIC ACID

Triterpenic acids – ursolic acid and its isomer, oleanolic acid widely occur in plants, the main component being ursolic acid. It may be used in medicine, as almost all extracts of plants containing ursolic acid are used in folk medicine. Ursolic acid and its derivatives show extensive biological activity: antiinflammatory, hypocholesterinemic, antiatherosclerotic, antimicrobial, hypolipedemic and cardiostimulating activity.

Besides, ursolic acid may be used as protein synthesis modifier, as a cosmetic agent, a remedy for lymphocytic leukemia and antitumor preparation.

At Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences method has been worked out for the preparation from plants of a (4:1) mixture of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid and 95% pure ursolic acid.
